Many people think that zombies are a modern invention. But the Draugr of Norse mythology came much earlier, and were the "walking dead" warriors of their day. They were animated corpses with a corporeal body, unlike ghosts, with similar physical abilities as they once had in life. These undead or living-dead creatures were to be found in or around their graves, often guarding treasure buried with them in their burial mound. Draugr possessed superhuman strength, could increase their size at will, and retained a semblance of their former intelligence. Draugr were also popularized in recent times by their inclusion in the "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" game.
