Viking Sonnenrad "Black Sun" Pendant - Ancient German "Sun Wheel" Design
There's a great deal of mystery surrounding the symbol sometimes referred to as the Sonnenrad (which is German for "Sun Wheel"). It has also been called the Black Sun, and some versions of it first appeared in 4th Century Roman brooches and fibula. This design was also thought to have been worn on Frankish, Slavic and Alemannic women's belts. Historically, the number of rays in the sun design has varied between five an twelve. In more modern times, throughout the 20th Century and beyond, the Sun Wheel has become associated with occult mysticism, German neopaganism and, in particular, the German deity known as Irmin.
